What actually stops that musty mould smell
To get rid of a musty mould smell, find and fix the moisture source, clean or remove affected material, and dry the area fully. A fragrance may cover the smell, but it cannot do those jobs. A musty smell can also have other causes, so check before assuming mould is responsible.
Start where you notice it: check damp contents and the back panel in a cupboard; look for leaks and condensation in a room. If the smell remains after cleaning and drying, get help checking for hidden damp rather than adding more fragrance. The cleanup steps below explain what to do next.
Why does mould smell musty in the first place?
Some compounds released by mould have a musty smell. The US EPA calls these microbial volatile organic compounds, or MVOCs. A mouldy odour is worth investigating, but smell alone does not locate or identify the source. Damp or mould may be hidden behind furniture or inside a cupboard.
Why doesn't masking the smell work?
A fragranced candle, plug-in or spray may cover the odour, but fragrance does not repair a leak or remove mouldy material. Check the source even if the room smells fresher.
Here is what each common move actually does to the smell.
| What you do | What it targets | What happens to the smell |
|---|---|---|
| Air freshener or candle | Your nose | May mask the odour without addressing its source |
| Wiping the visible patch | The surface you see | May persist if affected material or damp remains |
| Bleach on the mark | A compatible surface, as the label directs | Does not repair the moisture source |
| Drying and airing the room | The moisture mould needs | Helps control damp; affected material still needs attention |
The US EPA does not recommend bleach for routine mould cleanup. Mouldy material needs cleaning or removal, and the moisture source needs attention. If you use any cleaning product, follow its label and never mix cleaners. A persistent smell is a reason to investigate further, not proof that a particular treatment worked or failed.
So what actually works?
Start with the damp and any affected material, not a fragrance. Find and fix leaks, clean suitable surfaces, and dry them thoroughly. Ventilation helps, but a hidden damp patch can need closer investigation.
What has First Light been tested for?
First Light is our six-oil essential-oil blend. It is 100% natural, six pure essential oils, no fillers, no synthetic fragrance.
In an independent laboratory surface test (BS EN 13697:2023), undiluted First Light left 99.2% less live Aspergillus niger after 15 minutes of direct contact. That is a lab result on a surface, not a result in the air or across a room. The conditions are in our First Light contact-test summary. For the difference between contact and vapour research, read our essential-oil evidence guide.
An oil blend does not dry a wet wall or fix a leak. Moisture control and removal of affected material still come first.
If you are considering First Light once the damp and affected material have been dealt with, see the Protection Pack: First Light with a waterless diffuser. Follow the use and safety directions. A fresher scent is not evidence that mould has been removed.
What is causing the musty smell in my cupboard?
Closed storage can limit airflow. Check for damp shoes or linen, condensation on the wall behind the cupboard and nearby leaks. Any cupboard that stays damp deserves attention.
Pull everything out. Look for damp contents, visible mould and signs of water around the back panel. A cool surface alone does not identify the cause. Leave room for airflow and investigate any leak or condensation.
For clothes and wardrobe storage, see how to stop mould in a wardrobe and on clothes.
How do I get rid of a damp, musty smell in a room?
Possible moisture sources include a slow leak, condensation on a cold wall and washing dried indoors without enough ventilation. Check these rather than assuming the weather or season explains the smell.
Find and address the moisture source, then clean or replace affected material as needed. Use exhaust fans and ventilate when conditions help drying; a dehumidifier can help when the air stays humid. If the smell persists, investigate hidden damp rather than assuming the room is clear because visible surfaces are dry.
Use our moisture observation checklist to record where the smell is strongest, any visible damp and whether it returns after drying. If you suspect mould behind wall linings, get experienced help before disturbing them: the US EPA warns that investigating hidden mould can release spores.
How do you get rid of a musty mould smell?
Before cleaning, wear gloves, non-vented goggles and a properly fitted N95 respirator, as the US EPA advises. If you have health concerns, speak with a health professional first. Get experienced help for extensive growth, substantial water damage or an unclear source. Then work through these steps:
- Find the source. Follow your nose: cupboards, cold external walls, under windows, behind furniture pushed to the wall.
- Remove what you can see. Clean suitable hard surfaces with detergent and water, follow their care instructions, and dry fully. Mouldy porous materials may need professional cleaning or replacement.
- Cut the moisture. Fix leaks and investigate recurring condensation. Avoid drying washing indoors without adequate ventilation.
- Move the air. Use exhaust fans and open windows when conditions help drying. Consider a dehumidifier if indoor air stays humid.
- Check that it stays dry. If the smell returns, check again for damp or affected material and seek help if the source is unclear.
Keep checking that the room stays dry; mould can return when the moisture problem remains. The routine matters more than any single scrub, which is why our guide to keeping mould from coming back leans on the same moves: find the water, dry and ventilate.

Musty mould smell: quick answers
Does a musty smell always mean mould?
Not always. A musty smell can be a sign of mould or damp, and the smell alone does not identify its cause. Check for moisture and find its source.
Will an air freshener get rid of the musty smell?
It may mask the smell, but fragrance does not remove mouldy material or fix damp. Investigate the source even if the room smells fresher.
Can essential oils replace drying the room?
No. An oil blend does not dry a wet wall or fix a leak. Treat the damp first.
How should I use First Light around the home?
Follow the current label directions for First Light. Full directions sit on the First Light use and safety information.
