1 in 3 Australian homes had visible mould in the last twelve months.
Asthma Australia, 2022.
This was my office window.
The window in our office. Every month I cleaned it and every month it came back. It did not matter what we did, or what we used. It came back.
The next bit is worth reading. It is what made me stop.
The actual problem
What you can see is the colony. The spore in the air is what matters.
Mould (the fungus that grows on damp surfaces) releases microscopic seeds called spores. The spores float in the air for hours before they land. By the time you can see the black patch, the mould has been growing for weeks. Worse: any movement of air, or touching it, or wiping it, sends more spores into the air. That's why wiping does not work. You're helping it regrow.
01Spores in the air
Invisible. Thousands per cubic metre, constant. You breathe them in. Nothing on a supermarket shelf touches this stage.
02Landing on a damp surface
A spore lands on grout, paint, the back of a wardrobe. Any moisture and it germinates. Still invisible. Growing for two to three weeks.
03The black patch you see
Big enough to notice. You reach for bleach. Wipe, looks clean, but you have just spread more spores into the air which in turn will germinate.
The US EPA doesn't recommend bleach on mould. Verbatim: "The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) is not recommended as a routine practice."
Bleach pulls the colour out. It doesn't penetrate. The water it leaves behind is what the next spores need to land and grow. You've cleaned the spot and watered it.
This is why First Light is designed to combat mould spores, not mould growth. If you address the spores in the air, you can stop it from returning.
First Light has six oils. Nothing else. Clove + Litsea Cubeba are the primary antifungals (citral disrupts ergosterol biosynthesis in the mould's cell membrane, eugenol acts on the membrane directly). Tea tree + eucalyptus add their own antifungal action (terpinen-4-ol + 1,8-cineole damage the cell membrane by a different mechanism). Peppermint contributes a membrane-active antifungal layer. Cedarwood acts as a natural fixative, slowing evaporation.
So... you can keep wiping the mould, or you can put the bottle in your diffuser. Either works for a week. Only one works for a year.
If the answer is so simple, why are we not doing it already.
Mould remediators are. This is how we got the idea for First Light. We had a place that needed mould remediation. After the plaster and all visible mould was removed, they fogged the house. You can remove plaster, wipe surfaces and throw out mouldy items. But if you don't treat the air, it will come back.
Because we did not want to fog our home every day, we turned to essential oils. They are well-documented and powerful antifungals. Unfortunately essential oils have a perception problem. The category got swallowed by the wellness industry. Sleep, vibes, candles. People hear "essential oil" and think diffuser-and-incense, not antifungal compound.
How it stacks up
Bleach makes it worse. One oil is not enough.
Most mould products are designed for stage three (the patch you can see). First Light is designed for stages one and two (spores in the air, before they land). Three columns.
01Bleach
Kills colour at stage three. Doesn't touch stages one or two. Leaves water behind that feeds the next round. US EPA: not recommended as a routine practice.
02Most essential-oil sprays
Diluted in water or alcohol. Surface only. Fragrance-grade oils. No published lab data on mould.
03First Light
Six pure oils, undiluted. Vapour into the air. Targets the spores before they land. Lab tested 99.2% reduction in Aspergillus niger on direct contact (a surface test, not the airborne figure). Mechanism documented in Industrial Crops and Products (2024) and Antibiotics (2022).
Why we started Aurala.
Hi. I'm Ben. Now that we have gone through the science, I would like to tell you why we started Aurala.
We tried everything. It did not matter how often we cleaned or what we cleaned with. The mould kept returning and it was tough to see. The chemicals when we cleaned were bad for our family and the house felt heavy and itchy.
After talking to a mould remediator and having trouble with mould at work, I knew that I needed to address the mould spores in the air but couldn't find anything natural online. So I researched various essential oils and their impact on mould and after rounds of testing we settled on First Light, made from six oils, each oil contributing to the blend. Independently lab tested giving a 99.2% reduction in black mould on contact.
And the part I should not have to say but will anyway.
We are five months in. We have a handful of reviews. Nobody really knows us yet. The only way a brand like ours grows is by getting the bottle into the hands of people who are skeptical and letting them write the review they were going to write anyway. Good or bad. Especially bad. The negative reviews are where we learn what to fix.
If First Light doesn't help your mould, hit reply within 60 days with one photo and we refund the full price same day. You keep the bottle. No phone call, no return shipping, no haggling.
Questions worth asking
The questions sceptics ask first.
How does it actually work?
Two of the six oils, clove (eugenol) and Litsea Cubeba (citral), are the primary antifungals: citral disrupts ergosterol biosynthesis in the mould's cell membrane, while eugenol acts on the membrane directly. The other four oils carry the vapour and slow evaporation. Full mechanism on the How Mould Works page.
What if it doesn't work?
Reply within 60 days with one photo. Refund same day. No return shipping. Keep the bottle.
How do I use it?
Diffuse daily in the room mould keeps showing up in. The emailed plan covers variations.
How fast does it work?
Fresher smell in a week. Patch behaviour takes two to four weeks of daily diffusion. That is why the refund window is 60 days.
Safe around kids and pets?
First Light is a natural essential-oil blend made for everyday home use. Use it as directed with the room ventilated, keep it out of reach of children and pets, and take extra care around cats, which process some plant compounds differently to people. See our full guide to using First Light around children and pets.
Why isn't it in every supermarket?
Research is recent. The category has a wellness-industry image problem. We're five months old. The full version is on the How Mould Works page.
Will it stop mould coming back?
Used daily, it stops new spores germinating in the room you diffuse in. If you stop using it and the room stays damp, spores from outside will land and start again. It is not a one-time fix. It is a habit, like brushing your teeth.

My house smells amazing !
Easy to shop with and product came quickly.
I love the smell. I love the packaging. I love that it’s stopping mould from growing in my bathroom sink and no mould has come back on the ceiling so far. I love the diffuser as well! Great battery life, lovely and compact and looks lovely and minimal and sheek (is that how you spell that word?) Will definitely get me more when I run out.
Very prompt service and FAQs are very useful.
Love the scented aroma as it wafts through rooms and the product is living up to expectations with mould management. The diffuser is a great addition to the product bundle, and I will continue to use and recommend First Light!
I love the smell of this essential oil combination, its perfect in a defuser and very pleasant.
Works well, smells great and shipping was fast.
Shopping experience was great and speedy delivery!
Beautiful product! Everything about the brand from the luxe packaging to the functionality of the oils is very considered down to the smallest details. I now have 2 of the waterless diffusers and they are so much easier to have going than the water ones (constantly having to top up with water and also it adds more moisture to the air which isn't ideal). The oil blend smells amazing and makes the air feel fresh. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference it makes to the recurring mold growth in our house.
