Wipe the mould off the wall and it looks gone. A fortnight later it is back in the same spot, same shape, as if nothing happened. It did not matter how often I cleaned it or what I cleaned it with. I was treating a stain on a wall while the actual problem drifted around the room, out of sight.
Mould spreads by releasing microscopic spores that drift on the smallest indoor air currents and settle on almost every surface in a home. Those spores sit dormant until they land somewhere damp with something to feed on. Given enough moisture, warmth and a food source, they germinate within about 24 to 48 hours and release the next round, according to the US EPA's Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home.
How do mould spores travel through the air?
Mould does not crawl across a room. It reproduces by throwing off tiny spores, and in the EPA's words, "the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air" (the EPA's plain-language mould and moisture guide). Each spore is only a few micrometres across, far too small to see and far too light to fall quickly to the floor.
Because they are so light, spores behave less like grit and more like a fine mist. Research on indoor microbial aerosols describes airborne fungal particles clumping into clusters roughly the size of a water droplet, so they hang in the air and drift as a gentle haze (a review of indoor microbial aerosols). A door swinging shut, a fan turning over, someone walking past. Any of these is enough to carry spores from one part of a room to another.
How do mould spores get into your house?
Spores are already outdoors in the air, so keeping every one of them out is not on the table. The US CDC lists three ways they get inside. They blow in through "open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems". They hitch a ride, because "mold in the air outside can attach itself to clothing, shoes, and pets and be carried indoors". And once inside, any colony that finds moisture makes its own fresh supply (the US CDC's About Mold page). The CDC and EPA are American and spell it "mold", but the organism and the biology are the same.
Air conditioning and ducted heating matter here. They move large volumes of air around a house, so a damp spot near a return vent can seed spores into rooms that are nowhere near the original problem.
What conditions do mould spores need to grow?
A spore on a dry surface is basically a survival package waiting for one thing: water. The EPA is blunt that none of them grow without it, which is what makes moisture the single variable you can actually control. Almost everything else on the list is already present in a normal home.
Food is rarely the missing ingredient. Mould "can grow on virtually any organic material as long as moisture and oxygen are present", according to the EPA's Mold Course, Chapter 2. The paper facing on plasterboard, timber, house dust, fabric, carpet and the grime sitting in grout all qualify. Warmth is rarely limiting either, because most household moulds grow happily across the range of temperatures we keep our homes at. That leaves moisture doing almost all of the deciding.

At what humidity does mould start to grow?
The number worth remembering is 60 percent. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent, because sustained damp air feeds growth. Here is the part most people miss. Mould does not read the humidity of the room. It reads the wetness of the surface it is sitting on.
Scientists measure that as water activity. Damp-loving moulds need a water activity above roughly 0.90 to get going, while drier-tolerant species can germinate below 0.80, according to water-activity research published in the Journal of Food Protection. A cold wall or a window reveal can be far wetter at the surface than the room's humidity reading suggests, which is why mould turns up on cold corners while the middle of the same wall stays clean.
How quickly does mould grow after a leak or water damage?
Fast. The EPA's guidance is that if you dry water-damaged or damp materials within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mould will not grow. Past that window, spores that were sitting there dormant germinate, colonies establish, and they start producing the next generation of spores. That 24 to 48 hour figure is the whole reason plumbers and restorers move quickly after a burst pipe. It is a race against germination, not against the stain.
How long can mould spores stay airborne?
Longer than you would think, and much longer once something stirs them up. Spores rarely leave a colony on their own in large numbers. It takes airflow, vibration or a physical knock to launch them. In a 2024 study, a mild indoor air disturbance was enough to lift spores off a surface colony of Aspergillus niger, and between 30.4 and 85.2 percent of them were still airborne ten minutes later, per a 2024 Building and Environment study on Aspergillus niger. Ten minutes is plenty of time for a ceiling fan or a walk down the hall to move them into the next room.
Can mould spread from room to room?
Yes, and cleaning is one of the ways it happens. Brushing, dry-wiping, vacuuming without a HEPA filter or pulling out damp plasterboard all disturb a colony, and disturbance is exactly what puts spores in the air. Those spores drift, settle in a previously clean room, and wait for their next damp surface. This is why remediation guidance stresses sealing off the area and fixing the moisture before you start scrubbing, rather than attacking visible growth first. Why does mould keep coming back after you clean it?
Because you removed the stain, not the reason. Spores are everywhere and settle on everything, so a cleaned surface is reseeded from the air within days. If the moisture that fed the first colony is still there, the new spores simply germinate in the same spot. The World Health Organization puts the root cause plainly: bacteria and fungi "grow indoors when sufficient moisture is available" (the World Health Organization's dampness and mould guidelines). Victoria's health service reaches the same conclusion for households, advising that "the best way to control mould growth is to control moisture", or the problem is likely to reoccur (Victoria's Better Health Channel).
The EPA is honest about the ceiling on all of this. Verbatim: "It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust. The key to mold control is moisture control." That is the honest frame. You are not aiming for a spore-free house, because nobody gets one. You are aiming to keep surfaces dry enough that the spores already in the air have nowhere to take hold.
What actually stops the spread
Every credible source lands in the same place, and the building science has not shifted in 2026. Control the moisture and you control the mould. Dry wet materials inside the 24 to 48 hour window. Keep room humidity under 60 percent. Ventilate the rooms that make water, the bathroom, the kitchen and the laundry. Warm up the cold surfaces where condensation forms. Fixing the leak beats wiping the stain every single time.

Frequently asked questions
Does mould spread through air conditioning and vents?
Yes. The CDC lists vents and heating and air conditioning systems among the routes spores use to move around and enter a home, so a damp spot near ductwork can push spores into rooms well away from the source.
Can you ever get rid of all the mould spores in your home?
No, and no product or clean can. The EPA states it is impossible to keep a home free of every spore indoors, because some are always floating in the air and settled in house dust. The workable goal is moisture control, not a spore-free home.
Is "mold" the same thing as "mould"?
Same organism, different spelling. "Mould" is the Australian and British spelling; "mold" is American, which is why US sources like the EPA and CDC use it. The science does not change with the spelling.
How long after a leak do I have before mould sets in?
Roughly 24 to 48 hours. Dry the affected materials inside that window and, in most cases, mould will not establish. After that, colonies take hold and start releasing spores of their own.
