What does First Light's laboratory result show?
Our testing summary reports a 99.2% reduction in Aspergillus niger using the BS EN 13697:2023 method. The undiluted blend was in direct contact with the fungus for 15 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions.
That result describes the contact test. It does not establish how much mould a diffuser removes from a whole room.
What does the SAN-AIR vapour study show?
A 2022 study by UNSW researchers tested 10g of SAN-AIR Mould Gone gel in a 3,016cm³ chamber, roughly three litres. The gel evaporated for 10 minutes before an aerosol challenge was introduced. The fungal test used Aspergillus flavus.
The paper reported about 72% fewer viable spores without neutralisation and about 67% with neutralisation during collection. Those are results from that laboratory setup, not a promise to treat a room in 10 minutes. The study tested SAN-AIR, not First Light, and disclosed funding and product support from SAN-AIR.
There is no head-to-head result in these sources. Comparing 99.2% with 72% would ignore the different fungi, formulations and test methods.
Which format makes sense for you?
- Prefer a gel tub? SAN-AIR may suit the routine you want. Read the instructions for the specific product and space.
- Prefer a diffuser? First Light is the oil blend to consider. Check device compatibility and our product-use information before using it.
- Need to remove visible mould? Start with the affected material and a suitable cleaning approach, rather than choosing between a gel and a diffuser.
Whichever you consider, deal with damp first. NSW Health's mould guidance focuses on moisture control, ventilation and fixing leaks. If the source is unclear or the problem keeps returning, get it assessed. Neither product repairs a leak or dries wet building material.

Does a higher reduction percentage mean a better product?
Only comparable tests can answer that. A surface-contact test and an aerosol-chamber study use different conditions and cannot fairly rank these products against each other.
Can either product replace cleaning and moisture control?
No. Remove visible mould using an approach suitable for the material, let it dry, and deal with leaks or condensation. A gel or diffuser does not do those jobs.
